Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
In Memoriam
Non-Political Fitz is back again. I really don't know why these things stick in my craw so badly, but they do. So here is a post for folks that have the same problem:

Well, the attempts to register canoes and kayaks in Maine have gone down a couple of times, but now there is an attempt afoot to require 4 to 8 hours of boater education even for paddlers. I think it comes from some recent powerboat accidents. Probably yet another attempt to milk some revenue.

I'm sure we will be hearing more about this, but there is some information on the WWW. Here are a couple of links:

I know for a fact that the paddling community left the ears of the politicians ringing on the attempts to register paddle craft. It seems we didn't quite yell loud enough.

For heaven's sake, don't tell the polly-tishuns in illy-noise about this -- it might give them ideas!

We have our share of boater accidents here, and some involve canoes or kayaks running over large dams.

I spoze if they required some paddlesports and dam education in this state, it might be a good thing for us canoe instructors, as we'd maybe be able to charge money for our services...

Yeah, right...

That's why I say, don't tell the Illinois politicians about this! It's already nearly impossible to (legally) buy a used canoe out of state, if it isn't registered & titled in the source state. Doesn't matter if that kind of paperwork isn't required in the other state... still requires stoopidness...
