Novice Wood canoe owner
this canoe was my grandfathers - i remember using it as a kid 30-35 years ago. has been kept out of weather for many years, but age is getting to it. looking for information on it and opportunities for others that can appreciate the canoe to benefit from it.

thought it best to start with the serial number search

Check the serial number on both stems and compare. 15731 is an 18 foot canoe with closed gunwales and no sponsons.

Looks like you have a nice family canoe. If it would be more useful to you if it weighed about 20 pounds less, you could have it restored without the sponsons.

Thanks Kathy. I have checked the other end of the canoe for a serial # there as well and am able to barely make out the 17, but any other numbers are not legible.

Additional ?? on 15731 17

Kathy or others - I have had a number of questions re: the history of this canoe. I am attaching additional pic of the canoe showing the serial number quoted here. Is it possible to see the scanned record? And if the record does not match the physical features of the canoe, as previously noted in a ppost by Kathy, and the number is not visible at the other stem, what is my next way to try and locate more history? Thanks!

Hi Bill-- You've done all you need to do to get the correct build record: you posted the image of the serial number, which is (from my perception) 157319.

Old Town 157319 is a 17 foot CS (common sense, or middle grade) HW model canoe that was completed from March to June 1952. It was fitted with a keel and sponsons and was painted with Old Town design #37 (pictured below, courtesy "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.)

The canoe was shipped to the Reynolds Boat Company of Haverhill, MA, on July 2, 1952.

Build records only show the history of the building of the canoe and its original destination... the canoe's history is held by those who have used it over the years... so, you already know its true history! This is just its "birth story".

If this record doesn't seem to fit, we can keep trying...

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

thanks Kathy! I like your comment on "birth history". The picture of the painting style, the company and location of the company it was sent to makes absolute perfect sense when fitting it into history I remember.

The records absolutely fit and help tremendously!! thank you.
