William Keresey

Lake Monomonac
This is a great older canoe with many layers of exterior paint, trying to learn more about the age, original color, grade, where the boat was originally sold to. Thank you and I'm a 1st timer to WCHA. Will K

Welcome to the WCHA. The Old Town canoe with serial number 123993 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between December, 1937 and July, 1938. The original exterior paint color was medium green. It was shipped on July 27th, 1939 to the Decatur, Illinois. It was damaged in shipping and returned for repairs on August 28th, 1939 as shown on the back side of the card. The repairs included replacing the canvas, refinishing, and new bright green paint. It was resold on April 26th, 1940 to Newbury, New Hampshire. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links behind the thumbnail images attached below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
