I was told I have an old town canoe from 1952. Serial # is 163652 length is 16. Can someone tell the build info on this?
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim,

Old Town 163652 is a 16 foot CS (common sense, or middle) grade Yankee model canoe that was finished May-August of 1955. It has a keel and was originally dark green. It was shipped to Antietam, MD, on August 2 1955. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Hi again, Tim--

I was wondering if someone thought your canoe was built in 1952 because the serial number ends in "52". Old Town didn't include the date as part of their serial numbers, as some builders did. We're fortunate that the original records exist and that they have been scanned and are available on CD, so we can look them up.

I am sure you are right and the former owner must have thought the xxxx52 was a year. Thanks for such a quick response with the data sheet. Being 1 1955 model makes it more special to me as that was the year I was born. Sort of neat. Once again thanks for the quick response.

Hi Tim-- Glad your canoe seems like a birthday present!

There's interesting information on the Yankee model in past discussions here-- if you click on "search" above, and type in "Yankee", you should get to these discussions. Old Town discontinued the Yankee model in 1957.

More information on the Old Town Company in general can be found in Sue Audette's book, "Old Town, Our First Hundred Years", which is available through Sue herself at http://www.waterworkscanoe.com/book.html, and at most booksellers, Amazon, eBay, and public libraries.
