Langford rn#730812

Good luck with that.

I have contacted Langford on several occasions only to get [ in my opinion ] the run around and poor service. No serial number or canoe sale record help is available from this company. They also claim to be Canada's oldest existing canoe manufacturing company. Not!

Langford canoes

Thanks for helping me avoid wasting my time. I've learned that the old Langford Canoe company in Dorset went out of business and that their name was bought by a new family who have been selling (if not themselves making) canoes in recent years. They probably don't want to admit that they have no relation to the old company.

Langford Pictures

Going through my files, I found these Langford pictures, which probably came from previous posts here in Forums. Thought it might be helpful to add them to this recent discussion.

Langford Canoes

Thank you. Dave Lanthier already found these photos. Judging by the serial number for this canoe built in 1978, mine is a bit older.

I am actually trying to sell my canoe, which proved to be too light for us (12', 42lb), and a couple who came by to look at it spotted the serial number and that started me on this very interesting quest. I've always been interested in provenance, and I'd like to learn something about the old Langford Company in Dorset. They appear to have turned out a quite reputable product but either in limited quantities or so long ago that there's not much current information about them. The present Langford Company seems to be the last place to look for any information.

Part of the fun of owning an old canoe is becoming a "history detective". The search may not only involve details specific to the canoe, but includes history of the company, of the area the company was located in, and the impact of world history in general.

We have a canoe we are trying to identify but we do know it was from 1962-1964, when a property in Harcourt Park was purchased you received a canoe with the purchase. Ours has an ink stamped #707514 and a carved in #400 270 526. I hope this information may help you with year of yours, the more information I find on this forum the more I'm leaning to ours being a Langford from Dwight Ontario.

I own a 1972, 14' long Langford Canoe. The serial number stamped into the keel on the inside of the canoe near the bow is 726414. I am sure the 72 refers to the year the canoe was built, the 14 refers to the lenght, and I am betting the 64 is indicating that this canoe was the 64th built during that year making the serial number unique to my canoe.
