Hello All!
Been silently browsing the forum for a while now, and I recently bought a Langford canoe, the owner said he purchased it in the late 70s early 80s and it had been re-canvased by langford 18 years ago. The previous owner stated it was a "laker" model from Langford, however, I can find no information on this model, can anyone shed light on the style? (I know, no measurements yet!)
There is only one marking on the canoe, stamped "179"
The canvas is rotten and failing, on the trip home, some of the canvas detached from the gunnels... the wood, for the most part, appears to be in good condition.
Looking to strip, sand, fix a rib (upper portion rotted), other wood work as required, treat, varnish wood, and then re-canvas. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where good places to look for purchasing supplies? I have researched methods and information on various posts on the forum, and have a generally good idea on what needs to be done
Looking for peoples opinions on the following :
- Canvas thickness ? #8 #10 #12 ?
- Re-install the keel or not?
- Use of off-the-shelf canvas filler (ex: one from wooden-canoes.com)
- Availability of Langford logos? (Aftermarket? I hear Langford is not very cooperative/supportive on products produced by the previous "Langford")
- Opinion on mildew resistant canvas vs regular canvas (does it last as well as canvas treated with lead infused fillers of the past?)
- Wether to re-treat wood with linseed oil formula?
I will post more pictures once the canvas is removed
Regards,
-Patrick
