Kirk Wipper estate auction

Just thought I'd mention that several hundred items from the personal collection of the late Kirk Wipper, founder of the Kanawa Canoe Museum, which eventually became the core collection of the Canadian Canoe Museum, were sold at auction yesterday, 29 July 2012, at the farm belonging to Kirk and Ann, just outside Peterborough, ON. There was a reasonably good turn-out of bidders, and some very good buys interspersed with some very strong prices. There must have been well over 100 paddles for sale - some antique, some new, many used - along with various models and full-size canoes, artwork, furniture and knick-knacks. Lots of canoe-related memorabilia. Many of the paddles sold strongly, especially new and highly decorative pieces. A Kutenai sturgeon-nosed bark canoe (full-size) brought a winning bid of $12,000 ($15K once you add in the buyer's premium and sales taxes). A well-made scale model of a Chestnut canoe, 2' long, brought $600 in total, while an exceedingly rare, one-of-a-kind, 42" long 4-hole baidarka (kayak) from the Bering Sea area of Alaska went for a total of just under $3400. A collection of antique, Victorian ice skates went for over $2500. A dozen or so other full-size 'project' canoes in various states of repair also were sold. Several pics are below.

For those who missed this sale, some of Kirk's better items will be coming to auction on September 15th, at Waddington's, Cobourg, ON. That sale will feature a number of quality northwest coast native items, as well as more estate memorabilia.
