Kennebec canoe S/N 2772

Kennebec put serial number 2772 on a 17 foot long, smooth sided, double ended, Belgrade rowboat in 1923. If you have something that looks more like a canoe then it may actually be serial number 102772 which was usually marked as M 2772 on the tag. This was put on a 16 foot long Kineo Special in 1930. Which one do you have, what are the basic dimensions, can you supply some pictures of the serial numbers, and some overall pictures? Thanks,

Benson

Thanks Benson - I was interested in more info because this canoe is for sale. But before I drove 3 1/2 to view it I wanted to confirm its authenticity. Here are the two photos that were with the posting. Also stated the the canoe is 18' long.

Well, I can't help authenticate this for you. It might be a Kennebec or it may be something else with a Kennebec tag that was added at some point. The Kennebec record for 12772 shows an 18 foot long Torpedo model which doesn't match your pictures either. See if you can get some pictures showing the ends of the inside stems since Kennebec occasionally put a different number on the stem from the one on the nameplate. The suggestions at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help if the stem numbers are hard to find or read. Good luck,

Benson

I am going to check with the owner - I raised my initial question because he stated that it was an 18' canoe - but it looks like a 20 to me. And it would make sense if it is the Guide model. As mentioned it is a 3 1/2 hour drive to visit the owner and the canoe is for sale. I will post the response as soon as I receive it.

Benson - Here is the updated info I received from the owner: "Engraved on the inner spine reads 18 1/2 18350". Thanks Bill

Dan is correct as he kindly created the index for the Kennebec records. The Kennebec canoe with number 18350 is an 18.5 foot long Maine Guide model as shown on page 182 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Cameron on May 16th, 1925. Tuttle applied the canvas covering on May 30th, 1925 and the first filler coat on June 13th, 1925. It had no keel. The rails were installed by Mansell on July 1st, 1925. The original color was gray and it shipped to location 26-676 on June 25th, 1926. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The scans of these build records can be found below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). A description of the project to preserve other records like these is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection available from https://www.woodencanoe.org/product-page/the-historic-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection in the WCHA store.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
