There are no known records for the Carleton canoes with serial numbers 6585 and 6885 so those were probably built before Old Town purchased them in March of 1910. The Carleton canoe with serial number 8885 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, open spruce finish rails, and a keel. It was built between January and April, 1912. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 12th, 1912. A scan of this build record is shown below.
These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at
http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See
http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and
http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. It is not clear if this canoe has open or closed gunwales since the notes are conflicting. Can you share any pictures of the canoe and stem? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,
Benson
