Dear group,

My father has recently passed away and one of the items that he had stored that I have received is his Old Town canvas Canoe. As we were looking at it today, we found the serial number. Imprinted on the bottom of the bow is the serial number, 122462 with the length of 17.

We are looking for any information that you have available. When was it created, etc. I was told that my dad was not the original owner, but was given the canoe by a one of his teacher coworkers.

We are located in the far north suburbs of Chicago, Mundelein, IL. Please let me any questions that you might have. I have taken pictures of the entire canoe along with a short video using an iPhone.

My kids and I would love to hear any information that you might have.

Thank you very much for your help on this great old canoe

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 122462 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales and a keel. It was built between July, 1937 and April, 1938. The original exterior paint color was brilliant green. It shipped on June 23rd, 1938 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
