Curious about Wooden Canoes
Our local "Re-Store", a group that raises funds for our local Habitat for Humanity , and sells old building materials, furniture, has now gotten a donation of a wooden canoe with no canvas, seats, or thwarts. I'd appreciate help with identification. They were told it was an Old Town, but I do not think so as I have a 1929 Old Town, and there are differences. Here is what I know:
It looks like the serial number on the stem is 19508 18. The stem seems shorter than my Old Town
The ribs taper towards the top
the outwales are rather rounded
Where the seats and thwarts were, the bolt impressions are round, not diamond shaped
the decks are not like on my old town, they are sort of heart shaped

Any help appreciated, if the canoe is sold it will help Habitat for Humanity.

Thanks, Doug

Pictures will help the experts identify this canoe. Include images of the decks, stem profiles, seats, thwarts, ribs.... as many different views as you can get.

I agree with Paul that it will take pictures to identify this canoe. It would also be good to confirm the extreme overall length in a straight line to see if it is really an 18 foot long canoe. The Old Town with this serial number is 16 feet long from 1910 and the Carleton is 17 feet from 1927 as shown below. The Kennebec is 12 feet from 1928 and is shown at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?5945 in a previous request for a similar canoe. Let us know what you find.

The 18 is easy to read in the numbers, the others not so much. I will try to get back there. What should the pictures be of?
