Grand Laker Canoe

I'm hoping to tap into the collective wisdom of this forum regarding a valuable piece of canoe-building history: a mould designed by my father, Lance Wheaton. Dad has proudly and meticulously built 93 Grand Laker canoes on this mould. He is no longer building. Given his reputation for craftsmanship and the quality of his design, I believe this mould holds significant interest and possible historical value in our region. Dad has been approached by a couple of individuals who have expressed interest in buying his mould. I would appreciate any helpful information and advice.

Welcome, I would encourage your father to work something out with the individuals who have expressed interest. The historical value of an old canoe form often does not generate any significant financial value, unfortunately. A more important factor is usually the condition of the form. They wear out from use so it often isn't practical to continue building on a very old form. These commonly sell for a few hundred dollars, even the desirable ones in good shape with historical value. A single finished canoe is usually worth much more than the form used to make it. Jerry Stelmok at Island Falls Canoe has an original White form. It is not in great shape and can't easily be repaired so his White canoes are built on a new form. I'm sorry if this isn't great news. Good luck,

Benson
