Excited about new purchase - 1967 -16 ft Old Town Guide

What a great website! I'm staying up too late at night trying to read it all. I just purchased a 1967 -16 ft Old Town Guide Canoe in excellent shape. I've even had it on the water in Ely. I'd really like to find out everything I can about it, history, types of wood, etc. The serial number is 17890116. I would really appreciate your help. Once again great website!
Thank you so much,
Tim O.

Only the first of many late nights researching your canoe!

178901 (the 16 is the length) is on a 16' Old Town Guide with a keel installed and originally painted GS (Guides Special) Green. It was delivered to Downers Grove, IL on April 11, 1968. A copy of the build record is attached. Unfortunately, in later years, the build records do not contain as much detail as the earlier ones unless it was an unusual order. Generally, the canoe has white cedar ribs, red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales and probably ash, birch or oak decks, seats and thwarts.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA, http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php to watch a 10 minute video about WCHA and our programs and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

BW Guy,

This sounds familier, it's not the one that was for sale at Piragis in Ely was it, restored by Doug Nelson of Virginia?

Dan

Dan, Oh no! That sounds kind of ominous! Yes, that is the canoe. I saw it in June on my way to Kawnipi Lake in Quetico. Then I saw it again 2 weeks ago while staying at a resort in Ely. Then while staying at Gooseberry last week I decided I wanted it and went and made the deal. I hope your'e not aware of any problems with the canoe.

Yeah, we heard about that one all the way in Toronto.
Mike, will you be coming to Killbear with your camera, now that you've got "all that free time"? Since Dan wont be coming, of course.;)

Hi Tim,

Congratulations, you have a nice canoe.
No, I don't know of any problems with that canoe.

I'm not sure, but suspect that the 2 canoes hanging at Piragis were restored by the Nelson's, Robert (father) and son, Doug. They have been restoring canoes for many years and do nice work. Doug also posted an add in the Wooden canoe for these(?) canoes, along with a Seliga that was his fathers (they are keeping a second).

If you are in the Cities and want to talk or look at other W/C, send me a message.

Dan
