Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
For your enjoyment;
Dot Bonnenfant (Heritage Paddles) is an artisan who does pyrography and painted designs on canoe paddles.
http://www.heritagepaddles.com/N_sampledesigns.html
She posted a photo to FB of Judy Kavanagh's (Ottawa area women who does traditional stuff with natural materials, like she built a birchbark canoe about 20 years ago) delicate design on her paddle. Apparently people also apply this type of design by drawing, then scratching into the wood using a nail (!), then rubbing pigment into the lines, sand, stain (optional) and varnish.
So many options for paddle decoration.
