Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I could store a canoe in my unfinished basement, but the door isn't wide enough so it has to enter and exit sideways. I didn't like that idea, so while restoring it, I considered the best alternative, winching it up to my garage ceiling. It turns out there is just barely room. The garage door opens with an inch and a quarter clearance. The winching system is the same as those commercial metal systems for garage storage, where you throw a bunch of boxes on a metal grate and winch it up to the ceiling with pulleys. This is a huge relief for me, as the canoe was very much in the way. I knew exactly where any tool was - always on the other side of the canoe.

I'll hang some lights underneath it to eliminate the shadow on that side, and maybe add some protection to keep me from whacking it with a board. But now I'll just enjoy the floorspace.
