In Celebration of V-E Day Perhaps...
Hi Lew--
Old Town 140555 is a 17 foot CS (common sense) grade HW model canoe completed between August and December of 1944. It has red Western cedar planking and open spruce gunwales... the wood species of deck, thwarts, and seat frames isn't specified, but is commonly ash-- could be birch-- you can probably figure that out. Does it have cane seats, or "wartime" seats? It was fitted with a keel and sponsons (still there?). HWs with sponsons commonly have little carry-thwarts too. The canoe was painted dark green and GS (guide special) green--- two-tone?
The canoe was shipped seven months after completion, on July 16, 1945 to the Buffalo Marine Mart in Buffalo, NY-- in time for the guys returning from the war in Europe... maybe to help those at home to celebrate the war's end... over in the European direction anyway.
The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at
http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See
http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
