Curious about Wooden Canoes
I'm looking for the build record for a 17' OT, serial number 130933 18. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!

Either your 17' measurement is incorrect, or your serial number is incorrect, or you don't have an Old Town canoe. On an Old Town canoe, the last two separated digits, "18" here, indicate the length of the canoe -- confirmed by the length entry on the build record.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 130933 is shown as 18 feet long, Guide Special grade, Guide model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, seats, and thwarts, and equipped with a keel.. The canoe was built in 1940, with the exact beginning and ending dates unclear. The original exterior paint was guide special green. It was shipped to Duluth, Minnesota on April 15, 1941. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail images attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Greg
