Andy's canoe got filled ... and so did we!

LOVES Wooden Canoes
Hi paddlers, here's quick recap of the filling party (oops, workshop) that we had at Jackie Hutyera's home and shop on Friday June 27. About a dozen intrepid canoe fillers showed up to help Jackie fill the canvas on Andy's Joe Seliga boat, a project he left unfinished when he passed away last year. Filler-in-chief Craig Johnson brought a can of trusted old-school silica-based filler shipped in from Northwoods Canoe in Atkinson, Maine. (Or was it Island Falls Canoe in Atkinson, Maine?). He also brought along a supply of hand-sewn canvas finishing mitts that some irresponsible members decided to use as sock puppets. Larry Barth brought along Clint, a potential new member who's working on a Penn Yan restoration and surprisingly was not discouraged by what he witnessed as we prepared the filler, rolled it into the canvas, and smoothed it with mitts and bare hands. The whole process was peppered with camp stories, Andy stories, and discussions on old-school v new-school filler. Jackie's daughter Holly and her husband Ted took notes for potential future projects. Once the process was nearly complete, fillers and spectators repaired to Christopher's in downtown Cadiz for a delicious and filling farm-to-table lunch. And that was followed by home-made chocolate chip cookies supplied by Diane. Surprisingly tasty with bits of silica mixed in.

It was great to gather, and really great to welcome some new faces to the event. Our next event, of course, is Assembly, followed by our Salt Fork Paddle hosted by Craig Johnson August 16. See you there!

Brad
