This is a very unusual EM White canoe relative to the vast majority of those found today despite the fact that ones similar to this appear in White catalogs from at least 1915 through 1922. Catalog descriptions call it "The White Open Gunwale Canoe." Unlike most Whites that have very short decks with either a simple curved edge or a "reverse heart-shaped" deck often on cedar, the decks on this example are similar in style to the usual early decks of Old Town canoes.
All trim is mahogany (gunwales, decks, thwarts, seat frames, bow carry handle), apparently very rare for an EM White. The builder's tag is mounted to the carry handle instead of the deck.
Also unusual for an EM White, this canoe lacks the wrap around sheet brass stem covers that are held in place by numerous small nails through the canvas and into the stem, this canoe has a more traditional 3/8" brass stem band, screwed onto the face of the stem every 5 or 6 inches.
Best estimates suggest this canoe is from the early 1920s. It appears to be all original except seats likely re-caned and canvas re-painted, with no other previous restoration or significant repairs.
