The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is holding an auction for the benefit of the Waterway’s endowment fund as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Waterway; the endowment fund enables special projects that further the goal of maintaining the wilderness character of the Waterway.
The Allagash River is one of the greatest paddling waters in the Northeast, and indeed, in this country. The Waterway saved the river from being effectively erased from the landscape by dam projects proposed in the 1960s and ‘70s. The State of Maine established the Waterway to preserve the wilderness character of the Allagash river and acquired land on both sides of the river, securing the last bits of the river corridor only earlier this year. Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands manages the Waterway so the river is available to paddlers, fishermen, and other users while maintainint the wilderness character of ther river.
The items up for auction are of interest to any paddler, but especially paddlers of wood and canvas canoes --
A special edition 17 ½’ Atkinson Traveler wood and canvas canoe built by Rollin Thurlow, Northwoods Canoe Company, Atkinson, Maine
A 7-day trip on the Allagash River guided by Chip Cochrane of Allagash Canoe Trips, Carrabassett Valley, Maine
Two special edition paddles from Shaw and Tenney, Orono Maine
Two premium PFDs from outfitter Indian Hill Trading Post, Greenville, Maine
