Allagash wilderness waterway -- benefit auction

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is holding an auction for the benefit of the Waterway’s endowment fund as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Waterway; the endowment fund enables special projects that further the goal of maintaining the wilderness character of the Waterway.

The Allagash River is one of the greatest paddling waters in the Northeast, and indeed, in this country. The Waterway saved the river from being effectively erased from the landscape by dam projects proposed in the 1960s and ‘70s. The State of Maine established the Waterway to preserve the wilderness character of the Allagash river and acquired land on both sides of the river, securing the last bits of the river corridor only earlier this year. Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands manages the Waterway so the river is available to paddlers, fishermen, and other users while maintainint the wilderness character of ther river.

The items up for auction are of interest to any paddler, but especially paddlers of wood and canvas canoes --

A number of WCHA members have paddled the Allagash, some more than once, and know what a special river it is. Further information about the Allagash Wilderness Waterway is at < http://www.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/doc/parksearch/details.pl?park_id=2 >.

Thanks, the only pressure was due to procrastination and a canoe trip. I was planning on making them out of Whiskey barrel stave, I thought that would be more appropriate for the history of the Allagash, whiskey staves have a lot more prep.
It was a great weekend at Chamberlin Dam in July. Being that far in the woods, everyone who was there really want to be there. Allagash Village in Aug was a good time but Chamberlin was more intimate, no outside distractions.

The clock is ticking....there are two days left to bid and many of the items are still steals...the canoe, the paddles and the guided trip are still bargains.
Aside from the obvious intrinsic value, these items were donated and are being auctioned to benefit the Maine's Bureau of Parks and Lands and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation....
Bid generously...

If the Allagash is on your bucket list, here is your chance to buy a guided trip down the waterway in one of the most perfectly suited and gorgeous canoes.... Don't worry about dinging it up..that would please the builder...you'd get into his good graces by cracking a few planks and scraping a bit of paint off of the bottom. Then again, the river is running pretty well this year...you should be able to get all the way to Allagash with a single scrape (if you pay close attention.
