I am interested in any information regarding a 1923 Old Town Double Ender #76586 or possibly 76585.
I believe the boat was bought new in 1923 by my grandfather, C. Leverich Brett in Hopatcong, N.J. I have letters to Old Town from 1971 asking for information regarding 76585 and they responded that it was a double Ender that was shipped to Lake Hopatcong, however as I look at the stamping on the inside of the stem it looks to me like it is 76586 16. My father had the boat restored by Old Town in 1982 and all of the correspondence from that period indicated it is 76586.
Any information or ways to retrieve information will be greatly appreciated.

Tom,

Both serial numbers belonged to double end boats, but 76585 has your grandfather's name on it. That was a 16-foot CS (or common sense) Double End Boat built in 1923 and shipped to Hopatcong, N.J. It had open spruce gunwales, and ash decks, thwarts, and seats. It had a keel and the original color was dark green, with a highlight that I can't quite read on the build record.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

I have also attached another record that was adjacent to this serial number, but may have referred to the next canoe. It records considerable work done in 1981, so it was probably your boat.

If you have pictures, everyone would enjoy seeing them.

Norm

The notation beneath the color is for a painter ring-- ("p ring")-- and for those who aren't familiar with the lingo, this is a metal ring to which a rope ("painter") is attached.

Thanks for looking this up, Norm. My computer wasn't cooperating this morning, and I was curious to see the final answer.
