I have what I believe is an Old Town canoe with serial number 18 18153. It is 18'3" long by 35-1/2" at the beam and with a 12-1/8" draft. It has 3-3/16" thick sponsons amidships.

Can you tell me what brand this might be, when and where it was built and if it is a specific model or type?

Thanks for any information you might provide.

My guess is that you have a Carleton canoe since the Old Town and Kennebec canoes with this serial number are 16 and 17 feet long respectively.

The Carleton canoe with serial number 18153 is an 18 foot long, regular grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch trim, and sponsons. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on April 25th, 1924 to Chicago, Ill. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link under the thumbnail image attached below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

More information about this and other Carleton models can be found in the catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This canoe was built in the same factory in Old Town, Maine where the Old Town canoes were built. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
