17' OT Sportboat 1941

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Title says SN is MSZMT168E505. Listed as 1941 open boat, pleasure, green, wood, 15'9". Was advertised as 17', but title says otherwise. Oh well. It's been "professionally" restored. I have purchased, but not picked up yet. Will do so today or tomorrow. Have seen it , and it's lovely, needing only a little of the varnish attended to. Seat supports and gunnels where anchor rope wore a little on bow. Will get pix and post. Thanks, Jim...

This appears to be a hull identification number which is different from the original serial number. The MSZ prefix indicates that it is for "MASSACHUSETTS HOMEMADE BOATS" according to the page at http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=MSZ and the page at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm shows that this number may date from December of 2005. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you find the original serial number. These should also be stamped on the edge of the transom or on the edge of the middle inside brace that secures the bottom of the transom to the keelson. It would also help if you could post some pictures since all of the boats like this were not made by Old Town. Good luck,

Benson

H iBenson, and thanks for the reply. The info I listed in my first post came from the MA title. It also listed it as unknown manufacturer. All the info on first posting was from the title, which I received in today's mail. I saw the boat in a dark barn and bought it then, to be picked up later in the week, which I just did. After reading your reply, I double checked the transom and support for SN. None showing. The title was placed after a DMV guy came and looked at it, and gave it the SN as you posted above. He must have been a friend since he registered it at 15"9", just below the 16' limit for some things required by MA law. It measures actually 16' on the nose. That SN is placed on the back of the transom. The restoration work was supposedly done by a Kevin Martin. But I have no proof beyond the sellers word. It is well done however. Interestingly it has a metal tag on the bow, and my little research says they didn't use them until 1979. I assume the restorer didn't have a new decal to put on it, so used a newer style metal tag. I'll get some pix and post them, but if you Goggle "Antique Old Town Square Back Canoe" I think you'll find the listing w/pix. Hopefully we'll be able to track it down. I'll do the minor amount of varnish work and keep it for cruising and fishing. Thanks again. Jim...

The Google search that you suggested produced well over a million results including a craigslist advertisement in Boston which "has been deleted by its author." My guess is that the pictures at http://www.reachoo.com/ads/73658524 may show your boat. This appears to be the style of square stern sponson model that was shown in the Old Town catalogs from 1925 to 1964. The chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html indicates that an Old Town boat from 1941 will probably have a serial number in the 130,000 range. Kevin Martin may also be able to help and the page at http://kevinmartin.wcha.org/ has his contact information. Good luck,

Benson

Again, thanks so much for your assistance. I truly appreciate it. I have left a message for Kevin and await his response. As to the craigslist on google, I have found that if you go to craigslist it will not show uo, however if I click directly on the google listing , and yes it's the Boston one, that starts about a "piece of New England history", it opens and with pix still intact. Would you please try again. I don't know how to attach it to either here or to an email, but will try again. I just tried the Reachoo reference you gave me, and yes that's it. Regards, Jim...
