Curious about Wooden Canoes
My search for information regarding some restoration work I'd like to do on my late grandfather's old wood canoe lead me to the WCHA site and I figured this forum would be as good a place as any to start as I enjoyed already flipping through the discoveries of other forum members here.

I am unsure on the make although I did find a clearly labelled SN# 45237. The outer surface of the canoe is in quite poor condition but fortunately the interior is still in quite beautiful condition, considering.

Hopefully a few photos can help with identification. As far as my knowledge goes, it should have been purchased new within the 70s in Canada. Grateful to anyone who may help me learn a little more about this lovely canoe.

Hi as a follow up to what Dan has suggested you can help in it's identification by measuring the width of the ribs, their thickness, and the spacing in between. And the beam or width, and depth of the canoe at it's widest point. Although these are not 100% accurate they can certainly help. Mike Elliot in his book "this Old Canoe has information on the various Chestnut models.
Yours appears to have to have the most common ribs at 2 3/8" wide, and a spacing of 2"? If so it could be one of their cruiser models. Is there any remains of a decal on the bow deck, even a faint outline that would look like this?
I own three Chestnut canoes and love them all, hope this might help you a bit in identifying it?
