PADDLE YOUR OWN CANOE: WCHA Executive Director Annie Burke is doing exactly that at the recent WCHA Assembly held at Paul Smiths in the Adirondacks. A PAIR OF "NUTS: One of the early pre-fire canoes c 1910 from the Chestnut Canoe Compay of Fredericton NB and one of the last produced, a 1978 Deer from the Oromocto factory just before the Company closed its doors for good. IN SEARCH OF UTOPIA: The Roanoke River is North Carolina’s Amazon. It begins in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and flows 410 miles into the Albemarle Sound in Northeastern North Carolina. The lower third (almost its entire length in NC) is all flat water, making it ideal for paddlers as it flows through the Coastal Plain with no rocks. This has to be close to Utopia.
