I am restoring a old wood canvas canoe. The owner says it is a 1947 Old Town 16' canoe. The serial # is 161693 on the stem. Is this the correct year and what type Old town is this? What kind of documentation is available and where can I get it? Thank you.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 161693 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with half ribs. It was built between February and June, 1954. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on June 14th, 1954 to Burlington, Vermont. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

More information about this and other Old Town models can be found on the Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection CD. This is available from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that they could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
