I have a wooden canvased canoe with the serial number stamped on the stem FX49139. The canoe is approximately 13-15' long. Any idea who made this or what it's worth?

This canoe was in great shape, but was lost in a fire yesterday. I do have pictures of it, but was wondering what the value would be for insurance purposes. Probably not going to fare well on this one. Also lost was a brand new Grand Lake Canoe never been in the water, as well as an Old Town discovery canoe brand new and a Old Town square stern discoverer. Bad day.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. The article that I mentioned before at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 describes a similar insurance valuation where the fair market value was $1800 and the replacement cost was $3800. Your insurance company will probably require a written valuation from a builder or restorer based on the type of insurance coverage that you had purchased. The list of builders and restorers at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ would be a good place to start. Similar Penn Yan boats on eBay have recently sold from $301 to $3550. Good luck,

Benson
