Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi,

I just noticed #164520 - 16 on Craigslist in Seattle - with some photos. What do we know about that one ? Asking price is $395 and it sounds like it is in pretty good shape.

Hi Rick--

Old Town 164520 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) grade Guide model canoe, finished between December of 1955 and March 1956. It has a keel and was painted Guide Special Green, then shipped to Concord, MA on July 11, 1956.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

Also, please consider attending the WCHA Assembly this July-- it's great fun, and you don't need to bring a canoe-- there's usually someone you can hitch a ride with, if you want to take part in the paddle-by. The best part is the people you'll meet!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy

Emerson

Interestingly, there is still both a David and a Raymond Emerson in town.
