Birchbark canoe from the 1880s

The Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine currently has a birchbark canoe from the 1880s on display as shown below. This was made at the time when wood canvas canoes were first being developed so it shares many characteristics with the early canvas canoes. See https://www.portlandmuseum.org/ for more details.

I love the way the thwarts are wide and thin at the ends, so the mortise doesn't weaken the inwale too much. Really fine work!
