Just picked up my first OT canoe in Medford, OR today from a garage sale via CL. Drove a few hours to grab it at a deal. Past owner had it " about ten years" and "survived his 4 teenage daughters." He was very sad to see it go. I have three young children and we live very close to several large coastal lagoons and slow moving rivers here in Humboldt County, CA. I have been a kayak, raft guide in the past, etc..this is my first foray into the big haulers and i am excited to slow down a bit! Yes, it is almost 90 pounds, I know that's going to happen either way!
The serial is 200849 and the HIN is XTC00849M74J. After doing some research on here and finding a brochure online, I believe it is a early 1974 OT Carleton Voyageur 17 in fiberglass (maybe a March 1974 build via another serial check on here?). It still has 1976 and 1977 Oregon Marine registration licensing stickers on it which is cool to me. It looks like their were four dealers in OR then. I would love to know any more history about it than I could. Thank you, this project here at WCHA is very neat.
The canoe is the color yellow and in exceptional condition for its age IMO with only some small FG reinforcements I would like to make soon down the road. It has the original ABS seats, white vinyl rails and end decks. The balsa in-layed floor is very eye catching and it appears to have maybe had a raised floor installed at some point, maybe from OT? I'll make seat and thwart, yoke changes once I use it some, probably to cut some seat weight.
The canoe has distinctive foam-blown bulkheads with a FG cap over them. These helped me determine it is a Carleton Voyageur 17. This model shares a similar 37" width, 15" depth and 25" bow height as the Chipewyan Tripper 17, just a little more family oriented hull, but still WW capable to bigger volume Class II-ish water.
Excited to try it all and have some good old 70's fun either way. Thanks again WCHA, appreciate it.
