Curious about Wooden Canoes
So Very excited with my purchase of an old town canoe! Now to refurbish it :) Here is the serial number that is in it;

179625 17

These are stamped toward the bow and stern of the boat on the bottom of the inside on the keel. Would love to know more about this beautiful craft!

Thanks!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 179625 is shown as a 17 feet long Otca model fitted with a keel. The canoe was built in 1967-68. The original exterior paint color was L.C. Yellow (light chrome? lemon chrome?). It was shipped to Seattle, Washington on March 4, 1968. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below. It is common for build records of this date not to include information about the grade of the canoe or the woods used in its construction.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

And we love to see pictures of canoes -- especially before/after pictures of canoes that are going to be refurbished.

Of course, if you have any questions about refurbishing the canoe, don't be bashful about asking here. There are lots of folks here with lots of expertise who are more than willing to answer questions and help out.
