Using Cornstarch Instead of Silica as Filler

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Years ago I built a canvas covered, wood frame kayak. Some fourteen years later we burnt it because the wood was rotting. The canvas, aside from a bit of mold, was still in good shape. I had used cornstarch and linseed oil as filler.

I would appreciate hearing thoughts about using cornstarch again, instead of silica, on a canoe I'm currently restoring.

Thanks.

If you go to page 2 of this section, you will find the thread "current cost to recanvas". in that thread Dave Wermuth gave an excellent description of using Zinsser waterproofing paint as a filler. I just applied it to my recanvas job and am very happy with the result. Its easy, cheap and does a great job. Sand well after each coat for an excellant finish.
