I am doing some research on an Old Town canoe my family has had for over 40 years. I have discovered the serial number: 155028 16. Can any one give me some back ground, it's year, wood make-up and if it was originally purchased by a Mr. Rhea?
Thank you for any feed back.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 155028 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between November, 1950 and January, 1951. The original exterior paint color was dark red enamel. It shipped on February 1st, 1951 to Pittsburgh, Penna.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

The build record shows that it was originally shipped to an Old Town dealer named Kaufmann Department Stores. Mr. Rhea or someone else may have purchased it from them. The page at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif has some additional information about the woods used to build it. Please reply here if you have any other questions.
