Serial Number Search

The Kennebec with serial number 22808 is a 17 foot long Katahdin model type A as shown on pages 358 and 359 of volume five in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Mansell on August 8th, 1940. The canvas covering and first filler coat were applied by Thib. on November 9th, 1940. He applied the second filler coat on November 16th, 1940. It was railed by Mansell on the same day. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was completed by Thib. on November 23rd, 1940. The "F24" (Function number 24 or the thwarts?) was completed by Thib. on the same day. The original body color was light red. It shipped on August, 28th 1940 to C. P. Wenger & Son in order number "40-138" although this may be an error if the build dates are correct.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Must have been one of the last ones, eh?

Yes, a quick scan of volume five indicates that the last record of one being shipped was a "White Water Canoe" with serial number 22826 that left on March 6th, 1941. They continued to build these canoes until serial number 22861 which was planked, canvased, and filled on April 19th, 1941 but has no record of ever being finished. There are some records of a few Camp Chief canoes with serial numbers as high as 800353 that were worked on as late as April 26th, 1941. Their last known price list was dated January 1, 1943 as shown below. This was a very tough time to be in the canoe business.
