Serial number request

Canoe Ron

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I am requesting a build record for a 1910 Old Town Charles river canoe with a serial #12841. I have not been able to confirm this number except from a letter that accompanied it dated August 10 1954 from Old Town. It also states it could be a Carleton. The decks are typical Old Town.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 12841 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Charles River model that with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, spruce decks, spruce thwarts, spruce seats, spruce (outside) finish rails, a keel, and a painter ring. It was built between November, 1909 and June, 1910. The original exterior paint color was New Haven railroad green. It was shipped on June 30th, 1910(?) to St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Carleton canoe with serial number 12841 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between January and March, 1917. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on March 27th, 1917 to Lansing, Michigan.

Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match the canoe. Is there any sign of a painter ring and can you tell if the decks, seats, and thwarts are spruce or ash? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project,

Benson

Benson,
Thanks for the build records. All the information in the Old Town build matches. as best I can tell the all the information fits from the painter ring to the closed spruce gunwales and all spruce, thwarts, seats, and decks. Still trying to verify the serial number. I know that part is correct, and the rest is from the documentation that came with the canoe.
