Greetings all, I'm brand new to this site and Old Town in general. I guess i actually have a few questions. My boat, (18 ft if I'm not mistaking) is stamped 193197. I initially believed this to be the serial number but it also has a tag close to the stern reading XTC93197M73G. It appears to have been shipped around 1972 based on the chart but I would like more info. The bottom line question is what is the value range? Is it worth restoring properly and listing for $1000, or is it spray it off and sell it for $30 and a 12-pack?? Thanks ahead of time, Beau.

Greetings Beau,

Old Town 193197 is an 18 foot Carleton model canoe originally sprayed red and fitted with a keel. It was shipped to The Boat Locker in Westport, Connecticut, on March 1, 1973.

I don't know enough about this type of canoe to know if or how it can be repaired. Wood/canvas canoes are built of component parts and are repairable ad infinitum (given reasonable care), but I believe yours is a canoe built of "modern materials", which usually means it isn't restorable, but it may be possible to get it back into the water depending on the extent of the damage. If it is simply dirty and still floats (is not damaged), spraying it off may be all it needs, and you might get more than $30.

Others may chime in here with advice. You are most welcome to post pictures and get opinions. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others.
