Hello from Salem, Oregon. I'm new to the forum and was thrilled to find such a wonderful resource. I am a woodworker by trade and have always toyed with the thought of restoring a worthy older canoe. I came across this the other day,at a roadside sale right out of the barn..excellent wood but needing new canvas and some detailing. My dad is 86 and has a home on a lake here in Oregon. We are going to do this project together over this coming fall/winter. He has a beautiful '53 Chris Craft that he loves to work on, uses and truly enjoys so I would say that this couldn't have happened at a better time. I'm looking forward to using the resources and expertise available here to make this project the best it can be. George Crandall

Hello George,

This site is a wealth of information and the folks on here are interesting and helpful. If you can post photos someone will most likely be able to identify the make and model of your canoe.
Welcome aboard, MackyM

The Old Town canoe with serial number 173229 is 17 foot long Otca model with half ribs, and a keel. It was built between August, 1963 and January, 1964. The original exterior paint color was red. It shipped on January 9th, 1964 to Portland, Oregon. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Benson, Thank you for the lightning quick reply. I was thrilled to get the production information and am looking forward to sharing it with dad. I'm pleased that this canoe is the classic model. Those little half ribs make for a beautiful interior and the keel should make for some smooth straight paddling. I'll take red anytime! Interesting that this was shipped to Staff Jennings in Portland. They were right on the Willamette River just south of downtown. The building was located near the foot of the Sellwood bridge. The bridge is being replaced and I believe the building just went down a month ago or so. George
