i am trying to get some information on this old town canoe. I was my grandfathers and is in excellent condition. Seats have been recanned. :)

The Old Town canoe with serial number 139814 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open mahogany gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between April and June, 1944. The original exterior paint color was maroon. It shipped on July 1st, 1944 to Newark, New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Canoes with a family history are always special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for all the information. That description matches. It is currently painted green but I remember when I was young boy that it was red.I do not have a current picture but I will take some soon. My grandfather lived in southern Maine all his life so we are doing some research with family members to see if we can find out when he purchased it.
