I am trying to help my father-in-law decide whether or not to fix the above canoe, sell it as is, etc. It was his grandfathers and is in great shape visually...just has a small hole. Thanks!

The Old Town with serial number 161741 is a 16 foot long Guide model which may have been built originally as a low end HW (heavy water) model with thwarts in place of seats, half ribs, and a keel. It was built between February and May, 1954. The original color was G.S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on May 28th, 1954 to Grayling, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. The restorers listed at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ may be able to help if you decide to fix it. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 may be useful if you want to sell it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the decision,

Benson
