I expect that this serial number to correlate to a seventeen foot wooden sailing canoe by Carleton. Please let me know if anyone could track down the records pertaining to this canoe, and if it can be confirmed as a Carleton. I am not sure what other information would be required to confirm the manufacturer and year of construction. This was the only information I could find on the canoe.

The Carleton canoe with serial number 19351 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between December, 1925 and March, 1926. The original exterior paint color was orange with a half inch black stripe. This may have been similar to the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design20.gif which was known as the Old Town design number 20. It shipped on March 31st, 1926 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The Old Town with this number has closed gunwales and the Kennebec is 18 feet long so this Carleton record appears to be the best match. The sail rig was probably added after it left the factory since it is not mentioned on the build record. It does not look like a factory style rig. Good luck with the eBay sale. You will probably find four small nail holes in the deck that originally held a brass tag like the one shown at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=8361&d=1250430615 here. Old Town purchased Carleton in March, 1910 so you may want to correct this information in your advertisement. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Your pictures show a canoe with half-ribs, which correlates with the build record information Benson provided. If your canoe has outside stems and the wood species of the decks, thwarts, and seat frames matches what Benson found, this may be the correct record. Outside stems are a piece of steam-bent hardwood added to the outer edge of each end of the canoe to provide extra protection and also to add to aesthetic appeal.

The pictures at http://www.ebay.com/itm/260912088568 show the outside stems so it seems very likely that this is the Carleton indicated on the build record. The seller has also said that there are signs of the original orange paint under the current red.
