Replacing gunwales

Almonte Paddler

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have just purchased an old Chestnut canoe (Prospector I believe) that has severe rot on the stern. The deck and gunwales are shot.

Can I replace these without losing the canvas? It seems in fine shape.

Thanks

Gunwales

Are you talking inwales, outwales or both? Can you tack on a couple digital photos of the deck and rail areas? I'm thinking you'll want to lose the old canvas, but pictures will help.

Pictures of damage

Hi,

These were reduced to make them fit. I hope you can see enough.

The canvass is already 2nd generation. There is other $$ I want to spend first.

Good photos

Hi Art, the photos look good but a close up of the canvas itself would be helpful. based on what I see I think it would be false economy to try to keep the canvas. You are looking at a significant amount of work so my advice is to figure in the extra hundred or so and end up with everything redone.
Good luck and enjoy the journey.
