Canoe Builder
I am looking for the build record for an 18' OT Guide # 174495 18 . The one is the only number I'm not sure about. Also are there any stamps which are close to the original numbers to reset ones which were overly sanded.

Thanks, Pete

The Old Town canoe with serial number 174495 is an 18 foot long Guide model that was built on the Otca form with a keel, and narrow two and 3/4 inch planking. It was built between January and March, 1965. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on March 29th, 1965 to Boise, Idaho.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. The number stamps show up on eBay and other old tool auctions like http://www.ebay.com/itm/131127059358 but you will need to verify that the size and font match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson, this is the right canoe. Richard Williams had an earlier OT Guide which was lost in a fire. He bought this one in 1965 and it has been at their summer cabin in McCall, Id ever since. His sons are having me restore the canoe this winter as a present for their Dad, and hope it will stay at the cabin for another couple of generations of Williams.
