Ot 83784 - 18

Dan Lindberg

Ex Wood Hoarder
Please folks,

Could I see the build record for this canoe?
Maybe interesting?

It is 18 ft, the 1st 8 could be a "9".

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan--

83784 is a 17 foot AA grade HW... and

93784 is a 16 foot double-ended boat!

I'll try some other combinations...

My guess is that you might have the Old Town with serial number 33784. This is an 18 foot long, GS grade, IF (Ideal Fishing) or Guide's model canoe with Western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch trim, a keel, a mast seat, and step. It was built between August, 1914 and May, 1915. The original exterior paint color was battle ship gray. It shipped on May 11th, 1915 to Long Island, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Kathy and Benson,

The last one might be it, I'll ask the owner some questions to try to narrow it down/confirm it.

I've only seen 1 pic of it and that pic didn't show any details.

It does seem to have the standard high round OT end shape.
