Old Town Serial Number 37718 18

Avid sea kayaker, canoe paddler and sailor
Today I became the happy new owner of an 18' wood and canvas Old Town canoe, serial number 37718 18. Any information that you have on it would be appreciated.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 37718 is 17 feet long so my guess is that you have the one with number 137718. This is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Guide model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between June and November, 1943. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It may have moved to New Milford, Vermont by June 17th, 1981 when the back side indicates that there was a previous request for a copy of this information. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson, Thanks very much for the information. You are correct, I did not see the 1 and could barely make out the 3. For your records, the canoe is now in Damariscotta (mid-coast) Maine where it will be for many years. There is a crack in one of the ribs, but otherwise the condition of the wood, inside and out, is superb. The canvas is torn and in need of replacement. I will check out the other Forum sites to request information on how best restore the boat to near original. Thanks again.
