Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello - we recently acquired an old town boat with serial number 151969. What information do you have on this boat?
Thank you!!

Hi,
Your boat is a 12 foot CS (Common Sense or middle grade) All Wood Outboard equipped with a 48" deck, a keel, outside stems and a floorrack. It was built in 1948, painted Brilliant Green and sold to George's Marine Supply in Troy, NY.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Providing photographs would help with identification, as would an accurate measurement of the boat's
length.

thank you for the fast response!! I believe I may be reading a number incorrect. This boat is 16' and I believe it would have been sold locally here in Maine, it has been owned by a man in Dexter for the past 50 years. Below is a photo:

If you can send pictures of the serial number, it'll help. Sometimes getting different eyes on these helps figure it out!

Try taking a picture with the bright light coming from the side, instead of straight on. Use a strong flashlight, like an LED-type, if you have one.

Or turn down the exposure, to reduce the flash.

ok - unfortunately it may be too far gone.... After many attempts with different lighting my last guess is 158969?

My guess is that you have the Old Town with serial number 153969. This is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, square stern model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between February and April, 1950. The original exterior paint color was light gray enamel. It shipped on April, 24th, 1950 to Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. The back side of this record shows that it came back for repairs in October 8th, 1952 and was returned on October 23rd, 1952. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail images below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you find the serial numbers. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you all! This looks right! My husband and I are new to wooden boats and when we found this one and took it for its first ride, I'd say we are hooked. It needs some work and seeing this helps. I appreciate your help!!
