Thank you for looking this up. The next part of the mystery to solve is how it got from the Pocono Boat House to the Tulsa Ozark Club in northeastern Oklahoma. Can you imagine any problem with replacing the fiberglass with canvas?

Some canoes move a lot over time and others never do, so I can't help you with the move mystery questions. The FG model is primarily made of fiberglass so you won't have much left if you try to replace the fiberglass with canvas. See the diagams and descriptions at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=12405&d=1284306086 and let us know which one looks more like your canoe. You still may not have the correct serial number if your canoe looks like the one in the left column. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you find the serial number if you really have a wooden canoe.

I have tried to attach pictures but once they appear to upload, I am only given the choice to clear the list. They then go away. Error msg 2038. Don't know what I a doing wrong there. The pictures show that the inside of the canoe has ribs and planks. The cane seats have been damaged and replaced with canvas. The stems have a thick coat of paint on them but you can still make out the serial number - 185766. So, it is a little confusing. Whether it has a coating of fiberglass on it or not I don't know. It does have a wooden keel, wooden inwales and out wales, wooden seats, a brass stem band, etc. So, it does not match the fiberglass model in the picture you shared at all. I don't know if I will be trying to restore this one or not. We will see how I feel about it after finishing an 18 ft 1946 OTCA. At this point I don't know if I will be done, or have caught the bug. We will have to wait and see. I have been in contact with Jerry Stelmok and appreciate the help from all at WCHA.

As I enlarge the photos I have of the serial number, I am wondering if the number could be 135766. Sure looks like an 8 but maybe it is a 3. If 135766 was shipped to Oklahoma then that is probably the one I am working with. Let's give that a try.

Now I think that we have found the correct record. The Old Town canoe with serial number 135766 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between July and September, 1942. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 25th, 1943 to Tulsa, Okla. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,
Thanks so much for your patience and perseverance. I will have to learn more about AA and heavy water. The owner thought the 18 ft had the sponsons but the record did not indicate that. It does appear to be in better shape than the 18 ft and may not require as much to return it to the original condition. I also like the original color better. I haven't looked closely yet to see if it was simply painted or whether someone but fiberglass on it. This was done to the other canoe but they attempted to return the original paint job without the gold rope and leaf detail. The painted the inside with a massive layer of brown oil based paint. I will keep this one in mind as I finish the other and we will just have to see. I am restoring the first out of a desire to preserve it and the owner (a 94 year old widow) is going to dedicate it to our club. Maybe she will give me the second for the labor. Who knows. thanks again.
