Hi - Can you find any historical records on this canoe? Thank you very much.
Shell Lake, Wisconsin

The Old Town canoe with serial number 197702 which is a 17 foot long Chipewyan model that weighed 73 pounds when it was built in November of 1973. The original exterior color was red. It shipped on December 4th, 1973 to North River, New York. The back side of the card indicates that the warranty card was returned from Poughkeepsie, New York on August 15th, 1974. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This model was known as the Tripper in the 1973 catalog. It should also have a hull identification number on the starboard stern that begins with XTC. The page at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm has more details about how to interpret these numbers. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
