Old Town # E43367 15

Howie

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Hi Benson. Just picked up a 15' Old Town from Jack McGreivey at his home/workshop near Cato NY. Serial # E43367 15. What can you tell me about it? I'm figuring it's from the 20s or 30s as it uses keel screws with built in washers.

Old Town didn't typically use letters in their serial numbers. I've tried a number of possibilities as shown below but nothing matched a 15 foot long canoe. Can you provide some pictures of these numbers from the stems on each end? Thanks,

Benson

O boy - I love a mystery! Here's some more info:

Here's the best pic. I may see 14, then clearly see 336, perhaps followed by 67.

Here I see a 4 followed by 336 and maybe a 7

I see 143367:

As to the other features:
The center thwart is dead on 34.5" long, 36.6" to the outwales. It's 15' long.

The decks are tiny: 10.12" x 4.5"

The seats are pressed cane. The bolts are diamond head. The keel screws have built-in washers.

And here's a shot of the side construction.

And the stems are teeny - really thin. Only other canoe I've seen with stems like these was a Carleton. Could it be a Carleton? No carry thwarts though...

Thanks for your time Benson!

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 143361. This is a 15 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between December, 1945 and February, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on February 20th, 1946 to Old Forge, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
