Old Town Canoe

Aye, Cap'n

Old Town 129276 is an 18 foot AA grade (top grade) HW (heavy water, or lake-boat) model built between February 14 (love the date?) and May of 1940. It has mahogany decks, seat frames, and gunwales and was fitted with a keel and a floor rack. It was shipped to Springfield, Massachusetts on September 20, 1941. The original exterior paint color was similar to the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif and known as design number 37. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

Had to reply to you, though, and ask what happened to the vessel with serial number NCC1701... or aren't you THAT Jim Kirk!?

Thanks to Benson for posting the build record.

Here's what design 37 looks like-- the image is courtesy of "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection 1901-1993" edited by Benson Gray and Daniel Miller and available through www.dragonflycanoe.com.

Thanks Kathryn,

That is the canoe! It still has the #37 color scheme. It is in nice shape and belongs to a gentleman a few blocks from my home. Unlike NCC 1701 it will not be taken out of the galaxy.

Thank You Captain

May I call you Captain?

You must get many comments.

Many times paddling accross larger expanses of water in the black of night had me feeling as if I was paddling the cosmos. Until I bumped into a carp.
Regards, Dave.
