Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi All,

I recently bought a very dilapidated OTC from some folks that bought a house and the previous owner had just left the boat. They were going to us it as a yard decoration, but decided against it. The serial number is 148 612 16.

I also am looking at purchasing a fiberglass OTC with the serial number 187 135...can you tell me about fiberglass models as well?

Thanks so much for this wonderful service!

Matt

The Old Town canoe with serial number 148612 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between April and June, 1947. The original exterior paint color was fire red. It shipped on July 1st, 1947 to San Francisco, California.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 187135 is a 14 foot long fiberglass Carleton Voyager model with no keel that weighed 67 pounds. It was built in July, 1971. The original exterior gelcoat color was red. It shipped on August 6th, 1971 to Weymouth, Mass.

Scans showing both these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match your canoes. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
